Budding stars bid to follow in Hillier's footsteps as August Tournaments get underway

August 06 2013

Hundreds of young golfers teed it up at St Andrews today as the annual August Tournaments got underway.

The talented young golfers taking part in the Boys' and Junior Ladies' Open tournaments were all vying for the title and the chance to follow in the footsteps of former Junior Ladies winner Whitney Hillier.

The Australian, who clinched the title in 2006, has gone on to enjoy a long association with the Links and it continued last week when she competed at the 2013 Ricoh Women's British Open at the Old Course.

Ladies European Tour rookie Whitney, who also carried the scoreboard for the final group at the 2007 Ricoh Women's British Open at St Andrews, qualified for the star-studded field after a successful start to her rookie year.

The 22-year-old wished all this year's participants the best of luck and insisted, despite falling foul of the +1 weekend cut mark, St Andrews retained a very special place in her heart.

She added: "I love the Old Course and it's always a thrill to come back especially after having such great memories from my win in 2006. I hope everyone has a great couple of weeks."

Past winners of the St Andrews Ladies tournament include Scottish professionals Carly Booth, who also took part in the Women's British Open as well as Carnoustie Links Katy MacNicoll.
