The 2010 Eden and Strathtyrum tournaments got underway today. The 36 hole strokeplay qualifying rounds for both tournaments take place on the Eden and New courses at St Andrews Links.
The Eden Tournament is one of Scottish golf's most prestigious amateur events having been played for the first time in 1919. A field of 240 players are taking part in the qualifying rounds with the top 64 lowest aggregate scratch scores qualifying for the six matchplay rounds of the Eden Trophy. The 32 players with the lowest aggregate nett scores will take part in the Eden Tankard handicap competition over five matchplay rounds.
The leading scorer on the Eden Course was Oliver Huish from North Berwick who shot a three under par 67 in the early part of the day to lead by one from James Phillips from Windlesham. The only other players to break par were clubmates Chris Akers and Paul Sainsbury from Bankstown in Australia and Paul McMullan from King Edward Bay. On the New Course the leading score was a three over par 74 from David Green of Lochgelly. He finished one shot ahead of Wesley Ralph from Puckrup Hall.
The Strathtyrum Tournament is in its 22nd year and attracts amateur women golfers from throughout the UK. A field of 102 qualifiers will compete in the 36 hole qualifying strokeplay event. The 32 players with the lowest aggregate scratch scores will qualify for the matchplay stages of the Strathtyrum Trophy. The 16 players with the lowest aggregate nett scores will take part in the Strathtyrum Salver handicap event.
