St Andrews Links Trophy champion Tom Lewis has capped a remarkable entrance to professional golf by winning only his third event.
The 20 year old birdied five of the last seven holes to capture the Portuguese Open at the Oceanico Victoria Course at Vilamoura yesterday.
Having won the St Andrews Links Trophy in June, Lewis played in the Open Championship as an amateur and carded a five under par 65 in the first round, equalling the lowest round by an amateur in the championship and taking a share of the lead. Lewis went on to finish as the leading amateur on nine under par.
After playing a key role in Great Britain and Ireland's Walker Cup success at Royal Aberdeen Lewis turned professional and has now claimed his first victory in only his third professional start. He finished on a 21 under par total of 267 two shots clear of Spaniard Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
The victory gives Lewis, who hails from Welwyn Garden City, a two-year exemption on the tour and a £365,000 winners cheque.
