Two greenkeepers at St Andrews Links have received awards from Elmwood College for the high standard of their work at the Home of Golf.

Frank Aherne, who works at The Castle Course, has received the award for the Best Overall National Certificate Greenkeeping Student and Matthew Engwell, who works at the New and Jubilee courses, received the Principal Norval Black Cup award for the Best Practical Greenkeeping Student.

The awards were presented to Frank and Matthew at a recent ceremony at the college campus in Cupar.

Frank, who is 31 and hails from Cork, said, “I am delighted to receive the award. It is a great experience for me working at a course of the calibre of The Castle Course and I feel I am learning and improving all the time.

Matthew, 23, is from Huddersfield and previously studied at St Andrews University. He said, “It is fantastic experience for me working at the New and Jubilee courses and being able to put into practice what I am studying. It is really nice to receive this recognition and I am sure this will help me as I continue my career in greenkeeping.”

Gordon Moir, Director of Greenkeeping at St Andrews Links, said, “Both lads deserve a lot of credit for the hard work they have put in and the enthusiasm they have shown for learning new theory and skills. I am sure this will stand them in good stead for the future.”
