A healthy array of young Scottish golfers took their places in the semi-finals of the St Andrews Boys' and Junior Ladies' opens today. Cameron Farrell from Cardross and Calum Hill from Tantallon will contest one of tomorrow's semi-finals on the Old Course in the Boys' Open. Rebecca Wilson from Grange in Monifieth (pictured with the leading qualifier trophy) and local favourite Lauren Whyte from St Regulus will feature in the last four of the Junior Ladies' Open.
Farrell won 3 and 2 against James Hornsby from Heswall and Hill saw off the challenge of fellow Scot Callum Cromar from Aboyne by 2 and 1. The other semi-final will be an all English affair with Thomas Rowland from Prudhoe facing Christopher Howard from Manchester. Rowland won 2 and 1 against fellow Prudhoe member Andrew Scrimshaw and Howard won at the third extra hole after a tight match against Jamie Savage from Cawder.
The even split between Scottish and English players has been maintained from the quarter-finals when four Scots and four from south of the border progressed.
In the Junior Ladies' Open, Rebecca Wilson maintained her fine form with a 4 and 3 triumph over Tara McTaggart from Minto to move into the semi-finals. She will face Emma Harris from Peel who won 2 and 1 against Lianna Bailey from Nottingham Ladies. Bailey's sister Annabel was beaten 4 and 2 by Lauren Whyte and Olivia Jordan Higgins edged past Ella Ofstedahl from Mill Green by one hole.
The semi-finals and finals of both events will be played on the Old Course tomorrow.
