Ryder Cup stars prepare for Dunhill Links Championship06/10/2010

Ryder Cup stars Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell were joined by captain Colin Montgomerie in discussing Monday's victory and turning their minds to the business in hand of trying to win this week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

As the dust settles on the win at Celtic Manor each of the players discussed their aims for this week's championship which starts tomorrow on the Old Course at St Andrews Links, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.

Westwood, who has the opportunity to replace Tiger Woods as the number one ranked player in the world this week, said, "I have performed well at St Andrews over the last few years and feel that finally I have got the hang of it. It is somewhere I look forward to coming to and it's a tournament I enjoy playing as well."

Having set the course record on the Old Course at the Open Championship in July with a 63 in the first round only to run into trouble in the second round, McIlroy joked: "I'm playing St Andrews on Friday so that doesn't bode too well. Last time I played it on Friday, I shot 80! I'm looking forward to it though. I love St Andrews. It's one of my favourite places in the world."

US Open champion Graeme McDowell (pictured) reflected on winning the decisive match against Hunter Mahan to ensure Europe claimed the Ryder Cup and admitted he wasn't quite sure how he would play this week.

"I worked hard to get off the cloud nine feeling after Pebble Beach and all of a sudden I am back here in Scotland after holing the winning putt at the Ryder Cup and trying to get down again. It's a pleasant task to have though.

"I was beaten in a play-off here by Stephen Gallacher way back in 2004 so winning this is a massive goal for me. My expectations are fairly low this week but links golf is in my blood so you never know. Getting my head screwed back on for tomorrow is going to be tough."

Monty said he had been overwhelmed by the response to the victory with congratulatory messages flooding in from all over Europe and even from the Prime Minister. He added that he was looking forward to being able to get back to his own game after all the work that went in to captaining the Ryder Cup team. "I think it will be very easy to re-focus on my game. For the last two years I have been focusing my mind on other things but to compete in Europe these days you need to be 100% fit and in control of your mind. I haven't been in the last two years but I am looking forward to getting back to playing golf and competing."
