Sand Martins have returned to St Andrews Links for the fourth year in a row using a nesting area created for them by greenkeepers.
A vertical bank was preserved in the composting area for the small birds to make their home. They do this by digging tunnels to nest in and to protect them from predators.
Greenkeepers chose an area which is a safe distance from where they work and ensure that any soil they use for divot mix or in construction work is not left with a vertical bank or they would be unable to use the material.
