St Andrews Links Trophy champion is leading amateur at The Open19/07/2011

Fresh from winning the St Andrews Links Trophy last month Tom Lewis claimed the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at The Open Championship at Royal St George's.

The 20 year-old Englishman finished on nine over par, three shots ahead of US amateur champion Peter Uihlein. Lewis couldn't quite follow up on his excellent five under par 65 in the first round on the demanding Kent links, which saw him take a share of the lead with veteran Dane Thomas Bjorn and set the record for the lowest ever round by an amateur player in The Open, but he could be very satisfied with his week's work.

The 2009 Boys' Amateur Champion at Royal St George's and the number one ranked amateur player in England last year captured the St Andrews Links Trophy on the Old Course with a four shot victory over Sebatsian Maclean from Bolivia and Daan Huizing from the Netherlands.

After clinching the trophy Lewis spoke of his love for links golf and the courses at St Andrews, in particular, having competed in the Links Trophy for three years in succession.
