Tom Morris first opened his premises in St Andrews in 1866 making it the oldest golf shop in the world. After a period of renovation the shop reopened in April this year retailing apparel and accessories bearing the unique Tom Morris crest adapted from his original from 1848 when he first started his business.
Until now the new Tom Morris merchandise has been exclusively available from the shop overlooking the 18th green of the Old Course but now golf fans around the world can purchase items, including polo shirts, tee shirts, knitwear, golf caps and accessories online. Purchases from the Tom Morris shop make a contribution toward the preservation of the oldest golf shop in the world.
The four-time Open champion is widely recognised as the father of the modern game having played a key role in shaping the Old Course, during his lengthy tenure as Keeper of the Green, and in designing many prestigious courses around the UK. He was an entrepreneur, with his club and ball making business, and a proud family man, one of whose sons, Tommy, also won four Open Championships before his untimely demise.
A display case featuring Tom Morris’ locker is on show in the shop and visitors can also see his workbench where he made clubs and the fireplace where he used the heat to shape the rubber-like Gutta Percha balls.
