Restoration of the dunes at West Sands continues with over 6,000 tonnes of sand being moved from Outhead, at the mouth of the Eden Estuary, to the mouth of the Swilcan Burn at the Bruce Embankment.
The original plan was to move 3,000 tonnes of sand but this had to be doubled due to recent erosion caused by storms.
The next stage of the restoration work will be the transplanting of marram and sea lyme grasses from other areas of the dunes at West Sands to prevent wind erosion.
Fife Council is also looking to alter the method they use to collect seaweed and rubbish from the beach. Seaweed is important in helping the beach develop and evolve, it helps trap the sand and build up the dune system.
The work is part of West Sands improvements being carried out and funded by St Andrews Links Trust, The R&A and Fife Council.
