"Negotiations over the purchase of suitable land for the course have been progressing in recent months. Missives are expected to be concluded shortly and I feel that it is now appropriate to announce the proposed location," said Alan McGregor, general manager of St Andrews Links Trust. "We have consulted with several golf course architects who agreed unanimously that an extremely good quality golf course could be created on the land in question. It will complement our existing courses and offer increased flexibility and choice to our golfers."
The seventh course is being created in response to increasing demand to play in particular over the last decade. The demand is increasing from both local golfers, those who live in or near the town, and from visiting golfers. 2001 was a record year for the Links with the total rounds played reaching 215,000. Demand for season tickets from local golfers has risen over a third over the last four years.
