Open Championship returns to St Andrews14/01/2002

It has been confirmed by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club that the Open Championship will be held at St Andrews in 2005.

This will be the 27th time the Old Course has hosted the Open, one of the most significant events in golf. It was first played here in 1873 when the famous claret jug was won by local golfer, Tom Kidd, as well as a prize of £25.

The most recent staging of the Open at St Andrews was in 2000 when it attracted record crowds flocking to see Tiger Woods scoop the title and the £500,000 prize money.

"Naturally we are delighted that the Open is being held here in 2005," said Alan McGregor, general manager of St Andrews Links Trust. "It is an honour for the Trust and a tribute to the success of the Millennium Open which gave us so many memorable moments, adding to the unique golfing history of the Links."
