South Africa's top Amateurs enter for St Andrews Links Trophy11/04/2002

Five of South Africa's future golf stars have entered for the St Andrews Links Trophy, to be played over the Old and Jubilee courses on 25th and 26th May.

It was in the Links Trophy in 1989 that Ernie Els, currently number three in the World Rankings, added to his experience of conditions outside his native South Africa.

Now it is up to the crop of youngsters such as Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen to be the next players to keep South Africa at the forefront of world golf.

Schwartzel in particular has an impressive pedigree and recently had success at the highest level. Partnered by Oosthuizen, they won the All India Championship and Schwartzel comfortably lifted the individual title. In January Schwartzel played in the South African Open, an event on the European Tour, at the Country Club, Durban where he shot an impressive eight under par score of 280 to finish in a tie for 15th place behind the winner, Tim Clark.

Schwartzel is currently the back-marker in the Links Trophy with a handicap of plus five. He is joined in the field by Oosthuizen and the other South African players, Albert Kruger, James Kampte and Anton Haig.
