"This change brings the event in line with other top amateur tournaments such as the Brabazon Trophy and more closely mirrors the format of professional events," explained Niall Flanagan, Golf Services Manager of St Andrews Links Trust which runs the tournament. "It will put the players under less pressure than before when they had to complete both qualifying rounds in one day."
Tee-time intervals are also being increased from eight to 10 minutes. Having only one qualifying round a day will allow more players to compete, so the field will be expanded from 120 to 132.
Now in its 15th year, the Links Trophy has become an essential date on the amateur calendar and provides a great test for ambitious amateurs from around the world. Past competitors include Ernie Els, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose. In fourth place last year was Charl Schwartzel from South Africa, who has since turned professional and recently tied third in the South African Open.
