FILM BOOSTS FUNDS FOR JUNIOR GOLF15/06/2004

St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association has received a £1250 boost to its funds following the UK premiere of Stroke of Genius, the film of the life Bobby Jones.

The money was raised at an auction held after the film screening, which was attended by over 400 guests. Among these were members of the cast, the producers and people of the town who had been involved in the filming which took place on the Links in August 2003.

The evening was hosted by US producer, Kim Dawson, who paid tribute to everyone who helped to make his 13 year dream become reality. At the end of the film, John Imlay from Atlanta Athletic Club, where Bobby Jones was a member, read out the famous speech made by Jones when accepting Freedom of the City of St Andrews in the Younger Hall in 1958. This included the well known words: "If I could take out of my life everything except my experiences at St Andrews, I would have had a rich and full life."

Alan McGregor, general manager of St Andrews Links Trust, said: "We were delighted to be able to help ensure that a number of scenes could be filmed on the Links without disrupting golf. The film shows the town and the courses at their best and will certainly help to enhance the image of Home of Golf. Its emphasis on sportsmanship and the traditions of the game as upheld by an avid and exceptional young golfer makes the donation to junior golf in the town most appropriate and much appreciated."

Now in its third year, St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association is open to children who live in or go to school in the town. Its 360 members receive introductory coaching from volunteers and development training from golf professionals.

Stroke of Genius is being shown at the St Andrews Picture House this week and the DVD release is expected later in the year.
