The New and Eden Courses will today play hosts to a Ryder Cup style competiton between two Usenet discussion forums, the British-based uk.sport.golf and rec.sport.golf of North America. The competition is one of the first ever examples of a match being organised by people who have made contact only through the internet.

The RSG team is made up of eight players, seven from the US and one from Canada. RSG take part in several tournaments throughout North America every year, with one of the largest and longest running annual events hosted by David 'Thor' Collard in Columbus, Ohio. The North American players are all regular attendees of RSG-Ohio, and it was there that the possibility of a golf trip to Scotland was first discussed.

The USG side is composed of eight players from all over the UK and they have been honing their competitive skills at a tournament held yesterday in England.

After eighteen months of planning and hundreds of emails a trip was planned and courses booked, entirely through the internet. Two of the organisers, Kevin Nurse and David Sneddon, proposed a Ryder Cup format with players representing each Newsgroup, and where better to play the match than St Andrews, the home of golf.

Although there is no doubt that each match will be fiercely contested the main object is for people who have never met, other than through the medium of the internet, to meet in person, enjoy each other's company, both on and off the course, and create enduring friendships.
