Playing in St Andrews

"To win at St Andrews is the ultimate."

Tiger Woods

For six centuries golf has been played on the isthmus of land in the Eden Estuary known as St Andrews Links. The original track cut through the gorse bushes has now become a golfing mecca attracting pilgrims from around the world who want to follow in the footsteps of their heroes.

Until the late 19th Century, St Andrews Links was one golf course. As St Andrews’ popularity as a golfing and visitor destination grew demand for tee times became such that the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews decided to build a second course in 1895. With typical Victorian austerity, the first course became known as the Old and the second as the New. Two years later the Jubilee was built and the face of the Links changed forever.

These days the seven golf courses, three clubhouses, four golf shops and Golf Practice Centre and Golf Academy managed by St Andrews Links Trust make it the largest public golf complex in Europe. It is a place for people to play the game of golf at all levels, from novice to professional, for young and old, for male and female.

This section of the website provides information about the town of St Andrews and how to come here to play golf as well as the services and facilities we provide.

Dress Code

Golfers are expected to wear clothing appropriate for golf. Scruffy or torn clothing is not considered appropriate. If in doubt please consult the starter. The dress code is smart casual in the clubhouses.

Soft Spikes

Golfers are asked to wear plastic cleats or 'soft spikes' which do less damage to the greens. Spikes can be changed at the clubhouses for £10.

Speed of Play

An indication of the time four balls are expected to complete a round is published on the score card for each course, but golfers are asked to ensure that they play without delay as, by doing so, they will observe the traditions of St Andrews Links. Players' Assistants are on the Links at all times to help golfers and to ensure that they maintain speed of play. Your co-operation is appreciated.
