Names and Features of the Old Course
(hole by hole)

1. Burn 376yds/par 4
The Swilcan Burn loops across in front of the green.

2. Dyke 453yds/par 4
The 'dyke' is the old wall which forms the boundary between the hotel and the 17th fairway. Cheape's bunker is named after the family which owns the nearby Strathtyrum estate.

3. Cartgate 397yds/par 4
So named because it is close to the cart track which crossed the fairway and led to the beach.

4. Ginger Beer 480yds/par 4
Where Old Daw Anderson set up his refreshment stall in the1850s selling more potent brews than the name suggests!

5. Hole o'Cross 568yds/par 5
Maybe the former site of a cross or a reference to the gulley golfers had to cross to reach the green.

6. Heathery 412yds/par 4
A reminder of the times when the green was largely heather.

7. High 390yds/par 4
Shell bunker is one of the largest traps on the course.

8. Short 175yds/par 3
At 175 yards the name is self-explanatory.

9. End 352yds/par 4
The Kruger bunkers were built during the Boer War (1899-1902) when the British were fighting in the Transvaal whose president was Paul Kruger.

10. Bobby Jones 380yds/par 4
Named after the great golfer who died in 1971 and had such a close association with St Andrews.

11. High 174yds/par 3
Strath Bunker guards the green and refers to the Strath brothers, especially Davie, a friend and golfing partner of Young Tom Morris.

12. Heathery 348yds/par 4
Stroke bunker is so called because, once in it, you lose at least one stroke.

13. Hole 0'Cross 465yds/par 4
Walkinshaw was a local golfer whose enthusiasm exceeded his proficiency and he often ended up in a deep little 'pot' bunker which is named after him.

14. Long 618yds/par 5
At 581 yards it is the longest hole and has the largest bunker, Hell Bunker, around 100 yards from the pin. Others are the Beardies, Kitchen and Grave.

15. Cartgate 456yds/par 4
Sutherland Bunker refers to Mr A G Sutherland, a keen golfer who in 1869 was so outraged when he discovered that the bunker had been filled in that he wrote to the R&A several times. It became a talking point culminating in two cousins who went on to the course one night and recreated the bunker leaving a note with Sutherland's name on it. Cottage Bunker refers to Pilmour Cottage which is now Pilmour House and the Eden Clubhouse.

16. Corner of the Dyke 423yds/par 4
A cluster of three bunkers makes up Principal's Nose, possibly a reference to Mr Haldane, principal of St Mary's College in the early 19th century and endowed with a prominent, bulbous nose.

17. Road 455yds/par 4
Its fame is matched by its degree of difficulty. Named after the turnpike road running behind the green which has proved the downfall of many a top professional, most memorably when it cost Tom Watson the 1984 Open. The small but treacherous bunker in front of the green featured in the 1995 play-off between Daly and Rocca who took three shots to escape.

18. Tom Morris 357yds/par 4
The18th green was considered by Tom Morris to be his finest work.
