There are two explanations for the name. Some say that players had to 'cross' the chasm in their approach to the green; others say a cross once stood here.

Approach
Decision time. Can you carry the ridge? That will depend on many things. What will probably make up your mind will be the wind. If it is behind you and you feel confident, the line is between the two bunkers. If the wind is blowing towards you, lay up short and be sure to look ahead to see where the pin is. The green is 100 yards deep so the distance to the pin varies considerably.
