Records & Holes in One: 2001
Local golfer, Jonathan
Grubb watched his ball go into the hole on the 10th of the Eden
in November. He used a titanium faced driver and it was witnessed
by Brian Mckay and Bill Dewar. On the 5th hole of the Eden Course,
Derek Black from Shotts Golf Club achieved a hole in one
using a six iron.
In September on the 17th
hole on the Jubilee Course Mr Rohnisch Claes from Orebro
Golf Club in Sweden achieved a hole in one using a 4 wood. Local
golfer Douglas Mottashaw struck lucky on the 5th hole on
the Eden Course using a driver.
The achievement of two
other golfers also deserve a mention. Joe McLaughlin from
Airdrie had a great start on the Jubilee with an eagle on the long
par four first hole using a driver and a 4 iron. Also on the Jubilee,
James Martin, a member of Links Trust staff and the St Andrews
Golf Club, achieved an eagle on the 18th with a 7 iron.
August was a bumper month
for lucky golfers. On the 8th hole on the Old Course, Dan Aynesworth
from Hacienda Golf Club, USA, achieved a hole in one using a driver.
Also on the Old, fellow American Dirk Martin Anderson from
Crystal Lake Country Club watched his ball go into the 11th hole.
Mattias Borg from
Sweden had a perfect draw on the 18th hole on the Eden Course and
achieved a hole in one. Local golfer Stewart Wilson struck
lucky on the 5th hole on the same course using a nine iron. On the
same hole Paul F. Tew from Maryport Golf Club, USA used a
five iron for his ace.
On the 3rd hole on Balgove
Course, Ian Redford saw his ball drop into the hole. Barbara
Gordon from St Andrews had only been playing golf for six months
when to her delight, she achieved a hole in one at the 9th of the
Balgove
Ryan Lidkea from
Canada who played in the Junior World Cup Tournament struck lucky
on the 13th hole on the New Course. He used a six iron and was delighted
to see the ball go into the hole.
Ann Holliday from
St Andrews watched her ball vanish into the hole on the 5th of the
Eden Course . The 5th on the Jubilee gave Shirley Clarke something
to talk about back home in Arkansaw after she aced it using a driver.
Californian Dan Aynesworth
used a Big Bertha for his drive on the 8th on the Old and heard
the ball hit the flagstick before it dropped into the hole. Also
on the Old Michael Kenney from Baltimore chose a five iron
for his ace at the 11th.
Four golfers reported
holes-in-one on the Links in July. Local golfers, Joe Sidey
was playing the 9th on the New and Mr P Maloney was on the
8th on the Eden Course. Californian, Roger Levy, had his
first ever ace while playing the Old Course, and said it couldn't
have occurred at a more magical place. Bob Walsh from Oregon
went home more than happy with his round on the Jubilee after an
ace on the 17th.
In June Texan golfer,
Randy Pack, had a hole-in-one on the 11th of the Old Course
using an 8 iron for the 172 yard hole. Fellow American, Tom Leinart
from Washington joined a group as a single golfer on the Jubilee
and impressed his new playing partners with an ace at the 5th hole.
For Sylvia Frame
from Glasgow, a round on the Strathtyrum was made unforgettable
when she holed the 16th using a 5 iron - her first ever hole-in-one!
A visiting golfer from
Austria, Reinhard Horvath, watched in delight as the ball
disappeared into the cup on the 5th green of the New Course. He
used a six iron for the 180 yard hole.
Local golfer, Ryan
Brown, had a hole-in-one on the 9th of the Balgove Course while
he was playing with wife and children in May.
Grace Sutherland
from Edinburgh and a member of the St Rule Club, enjoyed a hole-in-one
on the par 3 16th hole of the Strathtyrum Course in June.
Local golfer Alec
Cunningham aced the 13th of the Jubilee Bronze in June. He was
playing St Andrews Club members John Cairns, Sandy Cameron and Jonathon
Wilson who reported that Alec hit a superb shot using a four iron,
and he and his partner Sandy won the game by one hole.
Friday 13 may be unlucky
for some but not for Ewen Cairns, a member of the St Andrews
University Golf Club, who had a hole-in-one using a pitching wedge
on the 8th hole of the Old Course in April.
The same hole proved
lucky for two more golfers recently. Tom Krahelski from California
used a nine iron for the 166 yard hole following advice from the
long-standing caddie, Jimmy Reid. Tom is big fan of St Andrews and
visits every year playing as much golf as possible during his stay.
Jimmy has caddied for Tom for 11 years and they have completed 174
rounds together on the Old Course.
Drew Santee from
Texas had his first ever hole-in-one on the 8th of the Old Course
in April using a six iron - his friends back home still don't believe
him!

A double eagle at the
5th made it a memorable trip to the Links for Julius Budacz
from North Carolina. He used a two wood for his second shot on the
514 yard par 5 hole and was surprised to find the ball lodged between
the pin and the cup.
Martin Goldie, first-time visitor to St Andrews also made
it a trip to remember when he aced the 15th hole of the Eden Course
in April. Mr Goldie from Hamilton used a five wood for the 170 yard
hole.
Australian, John Gemmell,
struck lucky on the 8th hole of the Old Course in April using a
four iron. Playing partner, Wayne Kitching, called the shot while
the ball was still in flight.
John Booth from
Durham managed an albatross on the 6th hole of the Jubilee Course
in March. He used a driver for the 498 yard hole and with an eight
iron, popped the ball in for three under par.
Margaret Cowden,
a member at St Regulus Golf Club, made her first ever hole-in-one
in February. She was on the 5th hole of the Eden Course and used
a seven wood for the 119 yard hole. She first realised she had been
lucky when she heard it on the ranger's radio!
