August Tournaments produce fine champions
Oliver Farr of Ludlow GC took the Eden Trophy title this year after defeating Kidderminster’s Stephen Clarke 4 and 3 in the tournament’s matchplay final held over a blustery and fast running Eden Course in first class condition.
Farr, an 18-year-old South Shropshire lad playing at St Andrews for the first time, took the lead at the 4 th hole but Clarke rallied at the 7 th to bring the match back to all square.
The final was still tied at the turn but then Farr accelerated away with wins at 10, 11 and 12. He defended his lead over the next three holes before taking the title at the 15 th.
For 21-year-old Clarke, it was a second successive runner-up spot but despite the disappointment he promised to return next year and try again to go one better.
Farr qualified for the matchplay stages of the tournament in only 47th place on 156, after scoring 75 on the Eden Course and 81 on the New Course, nevertheless Oliver showed himself to be a formidable opponent in the knock-out stages with only one of his matches making it to the 17 th. He got to the final after wins against Andrew Lawrence (Baberton) 3 and 2; Paul Desport (Hawick) 6 and 5; Andrew Carmichael (Charthills) 3 and 2; Luke Searle ( Richmond) 2 and 1; and Neil Raymond (Corhampton) 3 and 2.
The best qualifier was Roberto Laino of Bedford & County who returned a 67 on the Eden and a 71 on the New for a great three under par total of 138.
A record total of 355 golfers sought to enter the Eden Tournament this year, with 240 being successful. Handicap entries were cut at 4.7.

Karen Marshall |
Chris Appleby |
While the men’s event was won by a newcomer to the Links, the Strathtyrum Trophy was claimed for a record third time by 31-year-old Baberton golfer Karen Marshall, who was also the champion in 1997 and 2003. She beat Preston’s Chris Appleby, ten years her senior, 4 and 2 over the Eden Course.
Marshall got off to a great start with wins at the 3 rd and 4 th holes but Appleby fought back to win the next two holes and the match stayed all square after six. However, Links veteran Marshall got ahead again at the 7 th and was never to relinquish her control over the final, winning 10 and 11 to go three up. Appleby bravely won the 12 th, but Marshall clinched victory after taking the 15 th and 16 th.
Karen was always a favourite for the championship this year, and the Midlothian player qualified for the matchplay in second place with a 159 total. Top performer in the first two rounds of strokeplay was Amanda Shorrock of Pryors Hayes with a score of 157 over the Eden and New courses.
Karen’s route to the title included wins over Diana Payne ( Oakmere Park) 4 and 3; Stephanie Liddell ( Carlisle) 1 up; Louise Fraser (Comiston Ladies) 7 and 6; and local challenger Rebecca Watson (Elie and Earlsferry) 2 and 1.
In the handicap events, four-handicapper Thomas Robertson of East Kilbride won the Eden Tankard with a 4 and 2 defeat of Michael McGuigan of Clober, who plays off nine, while the Strathtyrum Salver went to Janis Slater (16) of Worksop who convincingly beat Pearl Smeaton (19) of Willesley Park 7 and 6.
In the Tankard final, McGuigan won the first hole but Robertson tied immediately and went on to win 3, 5, 6 and 8. Although he lost the long par four 13 th, Robertson regained his four shot lead on the 16 th green to close out the match.
The Salver was all over by the 12 th green. Slater stormed out of the blocks and won four of the first five holes. A consolation win at 6 was a brief respite for Smeaton as her opponent went on to claim 7, 9, 10 and 11.

Michael Williams |
Whitney Hillier |
Michael Williams is the new St Andrews Boys' Open champion and proud holder of the Merchants' Cup. The 17-year-old from Craigielaw near Edinburgh defeated local lad Iain Finlay of St Andrews GC, who is also a member of St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association (SALJGA), at the first extra hole in their matchplay final on the Old Course.
Williams was two up after two holes and three up after seven but Finlay fought back to take four straight holes between the 11th and the 14th to go 1 up. Playing into the breeze on the way home, the boys halved the 15th before Williams drew level at 16. Williams won the Road Hole to stand 1 up on the final tee but Finlay forced a concession at the 18th to take the tie into extra holes before succumbing on the 19th green.
After qualifying with a 72 on the Eden Course Williams had a great run to the final, with convincing wins in each of his matches on the Old Course. In round one he beat Ross Goodbrand (Westhill) 6 and 4, and in each of the next three rounds he won by 3 and 2 against Ryan Tuppen (Roundhay), Jonathan Hewitt (Gerrards Cross) and Ben Harman (Letchworth). In his semi final, Finlay played the Old Course in par figures to knock out top seed Sean Stevens (Deeside) 3 and 2.
A total of 178 boys entered this year’s competition with the handicap ballot falling at 6.7.
The Junior Ladies' Open title has gone to the other side of the world with 15-year-old Whitney Hillier of Joondalup GC near Perth in Western Australia. Whitney beat Pamela Prestwell of Bothwell Castle, who is two years her senior, on the third extra hole to claim the Golf Monthly Salver. Ms Prestwell took a two-shot lead after wins at the 9th and 10th but Whitney rallied to take three in a row from the 14th. Pamela took the 17th to draw level again and the ladies tied 18 to take their match into extra time, when Whitney won the day after Pamela’s putt for a half lipped out. Both girls impressed onlookers with their high quality performances in the final.
Whitney had earlier defeated top qualifier Holly Aitchison of Bedfordshire GC in her semi final, also at the 21st hole, and she came out on top 1 up against England internationalist Faye Sanderson (Heworth) in the last eight. Her victim in round one was Donna O’Connell (Burnham and Berrow), whom she beat by 4 and 2.
The boys' handicap champion is Shaun Clark from St Michaels Golf Club, who overcame Jack Logan (Westerhope) 1 up. Shaun, a 15-year-old who plays off four, is a member of SALJGA. All square after 12, three-handicapper Logan won the 13th but Clark took both 14 and 15. Logan drew level at 16 but Clark won the crucial 17th hole to take a one hole lead onto the last tee. A half at 18 earned Shaun the Murray Mitchell Trophy.
The Junior Ladies' handicap winner is Jessica Scott of Wanstead, who also beat her opponent, Lauren Mackin of Son Muntaner, 1 up. Lauren plays off 7 and was giving her opponent a total of nine shots. As in the other ties, the inward stretch provided huge excitement in the match. Lauren won 13 and 14 to go two up, but Jessica, who is 23 and playing in her last Junior Ladies’ Open, prevailed at each of the last three holes to emerge the winner of the Girls' Open Quaich.
All the junior finals produced close finishes, underlining the status of the Old Course as the best matchplay venue in golf.
