DRAW FOR
MILLENNIUM GRAND MATCH
The draw for the
starting holes for the St Andrews Millennium Grand Match took
place on 31 May in the Links Clubhouse. Watched by team captains
and representatives, members of the organising committee,
Colin Kennedy and Ellie Wilson, carried out the draw for the
49 teams entered so far.
"We are expecting
another two, possibly three, teams to enter and as we can
take a maximum of 54 teams, there is still time for one or
two late entries," said Mr Kennedy.
The R&A cannon
backed up by two 25 pounders from the Highland Gunners, will
fire at noon on Saturday 24 June to start this historic match.
Golfers will tee off from each of the 99 holes on the Links
in a massive shotgun start. Each team has ten members - so
there will be one pair on each of the five 18 hole Links courses
while a separate event is being held for children on the Balgove.
Late entries for the adult event should contact Ben MacDowel
on 01334 466666.
Team names range
from the Thistle Hackers to the Dot.Coms indicating the spirit
of the event, which is a celebration of 600 years of golf
and the new Millennium. Top prizes are Tom Morris statuettes
donated by Texan millionaire, J Neal Garland, with quaichs
for second and third place. Around 700 people are expected
to attend the evening dinner/dance and prize-giving being
held in a marquee on Station Park. The night will be rounded
off with a firework display.
