FIFE YOUNGSTERS WIN BOTH ST ANDREWS TOURNAMENTS

Fife teenager, George Murray, had a comfortable 4 and 3 victory in the final of St Andrews Boys' Open played over the Old Course last Friday.

Playing against Mark Henderson, 3 handicapper from Ballochmyle GC, 17-year-old Murray (Earlsferry Thistle GC) who plays off 1 and was last year's under-16 Scottish Boys' Champion, offered further proof of his growing talent on the golf course with a commanding display.

His progress to the title included a 4 and 3 defeat of Steven Taylor (Wishaw) and a narrow one hole victory over England's Jack Whiteway in the semi-final. Winning the title Murray, a fifth year pupil at the Waid Academy, broke the course record at Anstruther's Billowness course earlier this summer.

The Golf Monthly Salver also stayed in Fife following Louise Kenney's victory over English challenger, Lynsey Hughes in the St Andrews Junior Ladies Open. Kenney, the recently crowned Scottish Girls' Amateur Champion from Pitreavie GC, battled back from four down to beat Hughes from Royal Liverpool GC by one hole.

All square on the 18th tee of the Old Course, Kenney, who plays off 1, reached the green in two while Hughes (9) left herself a difficult recovery shot after overshooting the green. Kenney won the match by holing a two foot putt for par.

In the boys' handicap event for the Murray Mitchell Cup, 16-year-old Andy Keir from Monifieth defeated French youngster, Jean-Victor Courjon, one of two overseas competitors in the event, by 3 and 2.

Another Scot won the St Andrews Quaich in the Junior Ladies' handicap event. Claire Penman from Carnoustie Ladies GC cruised to a 6 and 5 victory over Kelly Morley (Astbury GC).
