Castle Course naming competition scoops award
The Castle Course naming competition was recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony held at the recent PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida.
The competition received an award in the PR/Promotions category of the International Network of Golf (ING) Industry Honours. A glass trophy was presented to St Andrews Links Trust which ran the competition in November 2006.
More than 4000 entries from around the world were submitted for the competition which was held through the www.standrews.org.uk website. It also attracted worldwide media coverage.
The competition was recognised by the ING judging panel, which comprised senior golf industry and media representatives, as an outstanding promotional initiative. It was praised for its creativity and generating media coverage around the world.
Alan McGregor , general manager of the Links trust, said, “It is pleasing to receive this recognition from people within the golf industry. We thought it was a good idea to involve the many people around the world who take an interest in the Home of Golf in the naming of our seventh course. When we actually started the competition, however, we were completely taken aback by the level of the response and the attachment the entrants felt toward St Andrews.
“The competition attracted a great deal of media interest and added to the positive coverage The Castle Course has received all over the world.”
The Castle Course was named after Kinkell Castle which stood on the site near Kinkell Ness in the Middle Ages. The name was suggested by Edwin Burtnett from Tampa, Florida. He will be invited to take part in the official opening ceremony for the course later in the year.
