Eden Trophy and Strathtyrum Trophy 2005
Round One

Craig Simmons of Patshull Park leads the Eden Trophy after the first round of stroke play. He returned a four under par 66 on the Eden Course to lie one shot clear of Stephen Marshall of Baberton. Last year's champion, Craig Donaldson form Downfield, started well with a par round of 70. On the New Course scoring was a good deal higher, with the best card of the day belonging to Chris Jones of Royal Birkdale who came home in a two over par 73, three shots better than the rest of the field. David Murtagh of Trentham Park had a hole in one at the notorious ninth of the New but his joy was short lived as he walked off the course for a no return at the 13th.

The ladies' event also saw much lower scores on the Eden than the New. 2004 winner, Daria Anisimova from Moscow shares the lead with 1998's champion Pamela Williamson of Baberton and Ann Ramsay of Kirriemuir, who won the Strathtyrum Quaich as best qualifier last year. All three ladies shot 77, four over par. On the New, the best score belonged to Jane Reeves of Seascale who signed for a 92.

Round Two
Craig Simmons continued his fine form of the opening day, returning a 73 on the New Course to add to his earlier 66 on the Eden. His 139 total earned him the Victory Cup as leading qualifier, six shots ahead of Daniel Bush from Hulme Hall. The cut mark for entry into the matchplay stages of the Eden Trophy fell at 156. Title-holder Craig Donaldson is among the 64 competitors left.

Ann Ramsay came out as the best of the qualifiers in the Strathtyrum Trophy. An 81 on the New brought her a two-round total of 158, equal with 2002 champion Lynda Brabender of Greenock whom she beat by virtue of a better first round. Other former winners through to the matchplay rounds are defending champion Daria Anisimova, four-time finalist Karen Marshall (Baberton) who triumphed in 1997 and 2003 and was runner-up in 1991 and 2001, and Pamela Williamson.

Matchplay Round One
Defending champion Craig Donaldson, from Downfield, made a surprise early exit in the first matchplay round of the Eden Trophy after losing a closely fought match on the final green to David Miller, from Nuneaton. Former champion Barry Ford was also defeated on the 18th green by number one seed and leading qualifier Craig Simmons in the second round. He was joined in the last 16 by Miller, who defeated David Southern, from Hindley Hall, at the first extra hole.

In a bad day for the champions, Russian title-holder Daria Anisimova was beaten 3 and 1 by Valeria Kirkwood, from Furness, in the first matchplay round of the Strathtyrum Trophy. She was joined on the way out by Karen Marshall, from Baberton, who lost out by 3 and 2 to Helen Faulds from Douglas Park. Leading qualifier Ann Ramsay came through in convincing fashion with a 6 and 4 defeat of Stephanie Liddell, from Carlisle.

Matchplay Round Two/Quarter-finals
David Miller's run in the Eden Trophy came to an end in the quarter-finals with a 3 and 2 defeat by number one seed Craig Simmons. Simmons, from Patshull Park, who captured the Victory Cup as the leading qualifier for the matchplay stages, secured his place in the last four. He was joined by Richard Craig, from Merchants of Edinburgh, Allan Johnston, from Cathcart Castle and Steven Clarke from Kidderminster, who finally overcame Tim Aggett, from Warren, at the 23rd hole.

Ann Ramsay continued her excellent form in the Strathtyrum Trophy with convincing wins of 4 and 3 over Elizabeth Burns, from Penwortham, and 7 and 6 over Claire Provan, from Baberton, to secure her place in the semi-finals. Marilyn Henderson, from West Rhine, Lynda Brabender, from West Greenock, and Helen Faulds also reached the last four.

Semi-finals/Finals

Craig Simmons maintained the high standards he set throughout the week to win the 2005 Eden Trophy. After a comfortable 4 and 3 win over Allan Johnston in the semi-finals, the number one seed was made to work harder in his second round of the day. He eventually triumphed 2 and 1 despite a spirited challenge from Steven Clarke. Clarke reached the final after winning at the first extra hole against Richard Craig. Simmons' victory meant he secured a double trophy haul after capturing the Victory Cup earlier in the week.

Marilyn Henderson won the 2005 Strathtyrum Trophy after a hard fought victory over Lynda Brabender at the second extra hole of the final. Henderson had earlier halted Ann Ramsay's progress with a 2 and 1 victory to secure her place in the final against Brabender, who defeated Helen Faulds at the sixth extra hole.
