English
internationalist, Richard Finch swept to a convincing victory
on the Old Course in the final stages of the 2003 St Andrews
Links Trophy in May. His final rounds of 69 and 70 on the
Old Course gave him a 276 total, five shots clear of fellow
English internationalist, Lee Corfield.

Finch,
from Hull, also took the Ian Forbes Memorial Cup for the
best qualifying score on 137 following 71 on the New Course
and 66 on the Old Course on the first two days of the
tournament. His aggregate of 276 matches the lowest score
for the Links Trophy, previously achieved by Graham Rankin
and Craig Watson, and his performance will undoubtedly
earn him a place on the Walker Cup team for the match
in September. |

Corfield
from Burnham & Berrow contented himself with Silver
Medal for an aggregate of 281, following final rounds
of 72 and 70 on the Old Course. Corfield looked like
a strong contender from the start of the tournament,
scoring an impressive 67 on the New Course in round
one, setting a course record on the new championship
length of 6679 yards.
Jack
Doherty from Glamorgan, a regular competitor in the
Links Trophy, shared third place with Sam Osborne from
Wentworth with 284.
Unusually
a hole in one was recorded each day of the tournament
starting when Keith Hamilton (Whitecraigs) carded an
ace during the opening round on the New Course. He used
a five iron for the 225yd, 9th hole of the New Course.
On
Saturday it was the turn of Eric Ramsay (Carnoustie),
who holed his shot with a seven-iron on the 172 yd,
11th hole of the Old Course. The same hole proved lucky
for Stuart Wilson (Forfar) 24 hours later, also using
a 7-iron.

The
Links Trophy was inaugurated in 1989 and is now one of the
most prestigious amateur events in world golf. Top golfers
today such as Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington,
Philip Price and Paul McGinley all played in the Links Trophy
early in their careers as it provided them with valuable tournament
experience.
