HISTORY
Championships at St Andrews Links
A number of major championships
take place regularly on the Links. The most important is the Open
Championship which was first held on the Old Course in 1873
and came here for the 27h time in 2005, when Tiger Woods joined
the elite list of double winners of the Claret Jug.
2005 also saw Pinehurst hosting the US Open. To find out more about the
links between these two golf venues click

Since its inception in
1985 the Alfred Dunhill
Cup has taken place on the Old Course every October. From 2001
the event's format was different. Its new name is the dunhill
links championship and the Old Course is one of three links
courses involved.
Top amateur events which
have been held here include the Walker
Cup, the Scottish
Amateur Championship and the Amateur
Championship. The Amateur Championship returned to the Links
in 2004 and was played on the Old and Jubilee Courses.
St
Andrews Links Trophy is the top amateur strokeplay championship
in Europe and attracts some of the best amateur golfers from around
the world. It takes place in June on the Old Course and either the
New or Jubilee (alternate years).
